To win the year, win the day

Life isn’t linear, it’s made up of a bunch of cycles.
These cycles can either benefit you or destroy you, there’s usually no in-between. Generally we are stuck in cycles we don’t care to stay in.
Autopilot.
I think of Autopilot as doing the same mindless tasks over and over, but subconsciously wanting more.
This was me until just recently, I thought about the life I wanted to live and decided changes had to be made. The way I fought this was through re-building my cycle to reach the outcomes I wanted.
I considered every day as a new cycle, so my focus became to slowly eliminate bad habits from those cycles, while replacing them with good ones. This was slow but made it easier to keep doing these routines over a long period of time.
That’s all, just think about it one day at a time.
“How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” - Annie Dillard”
Every day you wake up is the start of a new cycle, so it’s up to you to work to win that day.
If you can win the day, you can win the week, then those weeks turn into months, months into years, and you get the picture.
But you can’t win the year if you don’t win the day.
This is what I suggest to focus on as your plan your new routine, the three main pillars with some examples.
• Health: Gym, and improving diet
• Wealth: Starting a side-business, spending less
• Wisdom: Reading books, consuming better content
If you incorporate to improve just one thing in every one of these domains, you’ll be an entirely different person in 6 months.
This is why your routine is so important, when I didn’t have routines I fell back into bad habits like eating junk food, or wasting time on social media.
One thing to note is that you need to make this transition as easy as possible because if you’ve built these habits over time, it’ll be hard to re-wire your brain in a short amount of time. So leverage whatever you can to make better choices require as little friction as possible.
For example, when I wanted to get in better shape, I meal prepped, and I even went as far as filling up my work fridge with things I could eat so I didn’t have any excuses for deviating from my plan.
Or when I need to get an important task done I go to my friends house and we both work on something for a few hours, that way we both keep each other accountable.
This is important as entrepreneurs and creatives, because if we don’t answer to anyone it’s easier to fall off into time wasting activities.
Especially if we don’t set routines for ourselves.
Don’t put yourself in a space where you have to exert self control, make your routine work in a way in which all the choices are easy.
So as you build your ideal routine or cycle think about the following:
"What am I ok with repeating in order to achieve my goals?"
Then ensure your routine facilitates that.
Because whether it’s work you hate or work you love, you will always feel some friction before you start doing it.
So don’t underestimate how quickly you can reset back to old habits if you’re not planning correctly.
Having order and discipline 90% of the time will make the 10% you’re not feel so much better by comparison, while also setting you up for long-term success.
You can do it, just win the day.
Before you know it, you’ve won the year.
