Overcoming your self doubt

Overcoming your self doubt

One common trait I’ve noticed in capable people that are in a new domain or field, is a overwhelming sense of self doubt. As someone who’s done the same thing, and who’s taught people how to overcome it, I've found 3 ways to help mitigate these feelings.

The surprising thing is that they feel that way, even when there’s a mountain of evidence showing their capabilities.

Self-doubt usually stems from a perceived lack of ability to do something.

However as someone who has had to develop people to be leaders and productive team members I’ve found 3 thing that help mitigate this.

When I am mentoring these types, I usually do the following.

1. Repetition (As I mentioned before)

Repeating a task you’re not comfortable with is the best way to feel comfortable doing it after a while. You have no choice but to get good the more you do something. Since this leads to mastery naturally you’ll start gaining confidence even if you’re not aware of it.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing something, just do it more times.

It will get easier, and you’ll feel better.

2. Teaching others to do the task

When you’re teaching others, you end up having to break down concepts you never thought about before. In turn this makes it so you learn multiple aspects of the same skill, and gives you a more rounded foundation to work from.

Also, when you’re fielding questions from beginners you have to think about your answer in different ways in case your initial one doesn’t answer the question properly.

3. Documentation

When you document what you’re doing, whether through writing or video you will have a backlog of information at every stage. As I’ve mentioned before, this serves to help you:

• Problem solve

• Address weaknesses in your processes.

• Document wins

• Have data to analyze

There’s more benefits but I’d like to keep this concise.

Last benefit of documentation is that library you built will play out like a montage because you’ll be able to clearly see your growth.

You won’t be able to ignore how far you’ve come no matter how much you want to ignore it.

So if you're doubtful of your ability to do something the best way is to do more of it. It sounds obvious, but we tend to avoid doing this in hopes that feeling goes away.

It probably won't, but you'll get better and more confident either way.
